Warhol, Dr. Seuss and the Making of America

Warhol, Dr. Seuss and the Making of America brings to light the change that art can make on culture. This book takes the reader deep into the art and personal history of Andy Warhol and Dr. Seuss as well as the cultural movements in the American 1950s and 1960s.

This book compares the art of two of America’s pop artists and the American cultural "updates" to replace an old world with a dramatically new one. Consumerism, war, civil rights, fame, leadership style, environmental conservation, crime and punishment, religion, gender issues, imagination, and music―these cultural values and issues have undergone remarkable changes which began in the 1950s and 1960s and their changes echo today in America.

The artwork of Andy Warhol and Theodor Seuss Geisel reflect and reinforced America’s move toward a growing skepticism of what had been widely accepted cultural values, meanings, and acceptance of the formation of new ones.

Coming Soon - More Than Tulips: Van Gogh, Vermeer and Dutch Culture

To continue on her world tour of writing about art and culture, Elizabeth Raney leaves America, with her debut non-fiction book of Warhol, Dr. Seuss and the Making of America and takes us to the Netherlands next. Art and culture push forward together. Vermeer’s contributions to art came in a period of great wealth and cultural achievement that historians call the Dutch Golden Age. Van Gogh was a product of the later Protestant reformation in Holland and like the message at the time, he had the “right” to think for himself.

Vermeer and Van Gogh were born in different economic and cultural times in Holland. More Than Tulips: Van Gogh, Vermeer and Dutch Culture examines how together these two artists create a complete picture of Dutch art and culture. The book will be released in 2026.
